The comments on the FB post had me cracking up. The fly fishing crowd that is out targeting these fish in lowish water quality conditions, playing these fish for as long as possible to actually wear them down to land them on light tackle, and then chastise someone when one dies is nearly as hypocritical as it comes.

These people make all of these claims on what they are going to do "if '" they catch that big fish. They never say "when" they always say if.  I say the jury is still out on how they will react when put in that situation. If they want to turn loose a 12 year old fish that will probably not survive then that is their option, just like it is the option to keep. It should not turn into a day long discussion on what someone else would or should have done.

I couldn't agree more Rick.

@laker67 that Facebook group is full of some of the phoniest, scummiest, know-it-alls I have ever seen in the outdoors. I have seen those guys, on many occasions, do what they were criticizing this angler for doing/not doing. I'm not listening to anybody who associates with a pedophile or sits right at the outlets while others stand at the waterfalls and chuck fish food in the water. They can kick rocks.

Whose the pedophile?  I don't have a face book account.

It’s interesting as to 3 camps

one is the try and do right or what the current consensus is on what’s right morally and ethical if not legally required

two is not caring ether way

third, people who enjoy twisting the knife, troll if you will.

most fly fishermen I have known are more ethical than most, I am sure the gentleman intent was honest, the fish was post likely a goner before he did the Gil flap hold...that being said mishandling fish is a big no no these days....carp, muskie and even bass holds are even criticized....I even see guys post filleting a muskie just to enrage folks...sadly the fish died, been cooler if he lived and was caught again bigger....Frank comes to mind...
