willyfish Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Do you think there is a shelf life on line? I have some 2 year old maxima, brand new in its original pack that was stored inside. Do any lines go bad from mono to braid to fluoro? just curious
Lvn2Fish Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 I think they probably do . But I think it’s more based on temp it’s stored at and if it’s in the sun for extended periods of time . I’ve definitely seen floro separate and you end up with what looks like hair on your line . Tiny fragments and strands that peel away . I think braid would last the longest. I actually prefer braid that’s been on the reel for a while . It eventually gets soft and easy to work with , once whatever wax they put on it wears away . With mono I’m saying it’s fine , but it probably has some serious memory from being on the spool for a long time . Some people say you can use hot water to take out the memory when spooling on your reel
fshndoug Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 I use mono that is 6-7 years old that has been stored in the basement seems fine to me dtrs5kprs and Nick Adams 2

dpitt Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 You can do a test on the line, put an overhand knot in it, then pull from both directions.. if bad it will quickly break at the knot without much pressure. Champ188, Johnsfolly, snagged in outlet 3 and 1 other 3 1
DADAKOTA Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 I've only gotten the hair on flouro when a guide insert has been split or missing. dtrs5kprs 1
fishinwrench Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Flouro seems to be relatively unaffected by shelf time. Mono tends to dry out and get stiff. If your fingers are covered in white dust after re-lining then you probably spooled up with stale line. dtrs5kprs and abkeenan 2
Dutch Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 I have some Pline original that is close to 10 years old and is as good as the day I bought it. It is kept in a bait bag in the garage. Champ188, magicwormman, Terrierman and 1 other 4

I either respool a lot more than you do or buy in much smaller quantities (300 yds spools).
