Off Topic Eye Exam

Just pretty much got a huge shock. Becky and I went to the Eye Dr. for an exam 3 weeks ago  

They were extremely prompt and we were out of the office by 2:25 on a 2:00 appt.  Neither one of us needed an upgrade we both were fine with our old glasses. 

Charge was $60.00 each. No problem. Turns out that was really not the charge. We each got a bill yesterday.  Becky $279.00 and me $239.00. 

WOZZER. 

We had no idea a 25 minute eye exam was over $600.00. They said it was because we had not used any of our Medicare deductibles. 

Our plans don’t kick in till the $500 deduct is taken care of.    This is just a heads up and I know everyone has a different plan. 

I just had no idea it was that expensive.

Every form of "health care" is completely out of control.   

They schedule appointments for my wife and youngest daughter for the most ridiculous things.   They are in & out in less than 10 minutes and the COST (charged to insurance of course)  is totally outrageous.

Doctors are not Doctors first any longer. It is business first and foremost. Then maybe a little doctoring. My wife and I have been very satified with our supplemental with United Health Care. We have a PPO. Both my wifes new hips cost together was $550.00. Just cannot beat that. My eye exam last year was $30.00 out of pocket. Regular Dr visits 0 copay. Specialist $30.00. Dentist visits 2 a year, 0 copay.  Heck my Humira injection, for my RA, twice a month cost me sometimes $10.37 a month. If I had to pay regular price it would be $4 to 5 grand a month. And I would be suffering because I would not pay that for meds.

I've got UHC also under Medicare Advantage, I paid $60 for my last eye exam.

What happens out of network?   Like on vacation or traveling.   I’m getting close to 65 so I’m starting to think about it.   I went to one class at the community college but I’ll go a few more times to dial it in.

That’s the deal with Humana you have to be in network. 

Our deal is the deductible has to be covered prior to the plan kicking in. We can go or use any Dr. after the durn deductible is taken care of. 

I just had no idea what the cost really was for the eye exam if it was out of pocket.

Health insurance is what keeps me from retiring before 65.  I work remotely and get a bunch of PTO so it’s not bad.

Actually I'd say it's number two.

Pharma is number one.

Count the number of commercials on TV some evening that are for a new life altering drug or vaccine that will cure some new never before heard of illness that they recently invented.

And many include the phrase, "And you just might lose a little weight."

Yeah right - that's usually the problem in the first place - we're all so darn fat it's ridiculous.

Then listen to the list of "possible side effects" that always include exactly what the drug is supposed to treat or cure.

The biggest problem is never the affliction - it's the treatment and "cure".

One of my favorite quotes is, "Doctors and drugs are only there to amuse the patient while nature heals."
