bobby b. Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Since it is too cold for many of us to fish for a day or two and thus nothing to report, I thought I would ask a question regarding sunglasses. I find that for me to see the best into the water, I like a dark lens (polarized obviously) with an amber coating on the outside of the lens. My issue is that the outside coating rubs off over time due to cleaning. I talked to some of the manufactures and they advise to only use water with a micro towel which I do. I have bought Oakley, Revo, and Shady Rays. I find little difference in performance as long as the coating is good. The Revos did last the longest in this regard. So the question - Have you found a reasonably priced non-prescription lens that the coating does not come off? Thanks Bobby
Terrierman Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Glass lenses from Maui Jim or Costas. They last until you lose them or they are stolen. Not cheap but to me at least, worth the money. Royal Blue, gurzik, Champ188 and 3 others 5 1
Gavin Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 If you find some holler. I prefer glass lenses...and they are not cheap. I've had some pairs for years until lost or destoyed. .
fishinwrench Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I wear cheapies, wash the lenses with spit and my shirt tail, and have never noticed any coatings rubbing off. I've had high-dollar shades in the past RB, Smith, ect., but I honestly can't tell the difference....until I loose or break them...and then the difference is clear as day. 🙄 waterpossum 1
Bill Babler Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Terrierman we have the same recipe. Grey really work when fly fishing as you can see depth. My other go to is Orvis, they have outstanding eye wear. I'm also hearing great things about Vicious single prescription shades. nomolites Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 I have MJs, Costas and Oakleys…have had RB and others in the past. For fishing the Ozarks my MJ scrips in “Maui Brilliant” are the best, for being out in the salt all day Costas block more overall UV and get the nod. The Oakleys are only used for hunting(camp, brown lenses) or as backups in my truck. Agree 100% good glass can’t be beat. Mike Terrierman 1
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Maui Jim ultra thin glass are the top of the line. And so is the price. I love mine but they stay in my truck. I have some Costa's amber lense with green coating that are great on our rivers. Really brings out the gravel I would like to avoid in a jet boat. Wrap around for sure. The one thing I would do next time is get ventilated so they don't fog up. I had a pair of prescription polarized that were vented and they were great. Terrierman 1
Ryan Miloshewski Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 My glass Costa Fantail Pros are the best sunglasses I've ever used. Glass is the way to go, as others have said. snagged in outlet 3 and Terrierman 2 “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold
Quillback Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Here's a link to some info: How do Polarized Lenses Work? (goodeyes.com) Inexpensive polarized sunglasses differ from more expensive lenses in significant ways. Cheaper sunglasses may only have a thin chemical laminate on one side of the lens. The thin layer may only provide minimal benefit and the thin layer can be rubbed or scratched off easily. You may also notice aberrations in your lenses, as these are usually mass produced stamped out lenses that are lower quality. Higher quality options have film laminated between two layers of lens material. Encasing the laminate protects it from being scratched and provides additional benefits. The thicker the polarizing film, the more protective the lens is against glare. I've always had the lenses with the laminate on the outside. The biggest hazard I have encountered, if you leave them on the dashboard in the sun on a hot day it will distort the laminate. I'm guessing the high end lenses use the laminate between the lens material, if I was going to purchase high end polarized glasses, I would research the product to see if that is the case.
Lvn2Fish Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Just go with glass costas and you won’t be disappointed Smithvillesteve, Terrierman, Champ188 and 1 other 4
