  1. Jig bite turned on at Beaver today. Fished the winter series tournament today. Had 13.25 six fish limit with a 4.09 kicker. All came on the jig. Got second place and $573 bucks. Iโ€™ll take it. No crankbait bite yet. Did catch one one a jerkbait early and a Striper on a drop shot. Ha

May be a little early yet...I was there on Thursday last week and water temp on mainlake was still 57 deg. The spinnerbait bite is just getting started though....got on the right bank with some wind and had 3 keepers in short order right off the bank. Plan to go one day this week and throw a spinnerbait all day!!

    Fall Redear sunfish

Panfish NEED to be harvested, but people could be selective about their harvesting and not keep the biggest ones they catch. I wonโ€™t keep a Crappie over 14 inches and prefer to not keep them > 13 inches. I love catching Big Panfish. Great job!

    What's Cooking?

Did a Shakshuka style eggs this morning which I added potatoes. I made a spice blend of dark chili powder, smoked paprika, and old bay. I cooked and softened a small yellow onion in olive oil, then added three cloves of garlic, two teaspoons of the spice mix, 1/2 cup of chicken stock, a can of diced roasted tomatoes and a cup of tomato sauce. Cooked about 10 minutes then blended smooth. Added two cups of diced russet potatoes in the pan and a teaspoon of the spice mix. Cooked until slightly golden. Added the sauce back into the pan then added a cup of sliced artichoke and about two cups of swiss chard. Cooked for about 5 mins. I made a few depressions in the sauce and cracked in an egg into each depression, sprinkled about 1/3 cup of feta cheese, and cooked while covered until the whites were set. Served with toasted crusty bread.

  9. Need to get a line on boats and open seats, several of us are boatless and are greatly appreciative of seat offers. However, should there not be enough seats, we can rent boat(s) from Miles - it's $100/day. We need to get this figured out before arriving in case we need to notify Miles to get a boat ready. Here's the boat people I have so far: Mreed (possibly one open seat) Zigjigman Terrierman (possibly one open seat) Little Red Ham? Eric? Here's the list for boatless bank beaters: Myself JestersHK and possible 2 friends Daryk Campbell SR John's Folly Billethead I think Wounded one could be fishing with Eric? If I missed anyone, please reply.

    Jigfest 2018!

Well I have 16 down for lodging now - if that is the case that works out to 112.50 each, but we can round it up to $113. If it's 15 it will be $120, so bring some extra cash in case someone cancels. Remember Riley's only takes cash or checks. I have no problem being the treasurer, I'll have a big envelope we will put the money in and hand it to Miles, come see me when we're there and fork over the dough. I am claiming dibs on the first bedroom to the right on the ground floor of Cedar Gables, I am bringing my pooch and it's a convenient place to put him.

    What's Cooking?

That's my recipe but it doesn't have the magic part. I usually make these late at night. They were created one Christmas Eve. Okay it took me a few years to get it where I wanted it. But after I get them in a pan I let them rise. Then I stick them in the fridge overnight. Next morning pull them out and let them rise another hour or two. Yes two. And they will get huge. Now they are ready to cook.

  20. Since last April I've been having a blast fishing for Redear and other sunfish using small jigs and ultra ultralight tackle. My 7 foot Shimano Soare weighs 2.4 oz matched with a Stella C2000S reel and 2lb test. This year I've caught almost 50 master angler Redear from 10-13 inches as well as bass, bluegill, channel cats and several large crappie using this tackle. It slowed down during the summer but starting to catch them again this fall. Picture is of the first Redear of the fall, right at 11 inches. Really looking forward to the cooler weather, weeds are making it harder on me.

    Detailing?

I am not sure how it would work on boats, but I use rubbing alcohol on real tough stains in my car(cloth seats). I have a 6 year old daughter who is notorious for sneaking in a few permanent markers with her regular markers and it takes everything out with ease. We recently traded in my wife's Cobalt that had spilled coffee all of the floor mats(had probably been there for a few years), there were melted crayons, permanent marker "art" all over the back seat and I had it spotless within about 30 minutes. Perfect de-grease solution, but if trying on your boat you may want to either dilute it or try on a small inconspicuous spot.

  28. There are walleye in the lake for sure and the guys that target them seem to do well. I trailer my boat, but if I was going to get a slip and target walleye and striper, I'd try and get one at Lost Bridge Marina. There's walleye year round on the north end of the lake, and stripers are there year round also, but there are peaks and valleys as far as numbers. If you live in Rogers or Bella Vista it's going to be a 30-45 minute drive to LB Marina. I'm partial to that end of the lake, not as crowded, and certainly not as developed. It does get busy in the summer. If you live in Rogers, Prairie Creek marina is close by - it's a big marina and very busy during the summer, but it's centrally located and gives you access to the river arms or north towards Clifty and that area. Stripers get caught right out in front of the marina in the winter. Probably should also check to see what marinas sell gas in the winter if you plan of fishing during the winter.

  30. I have a rough enough time just counting 15 when crappie fishing. Have come home a few times with 16 or 14. I do anymore when I think I am at about 12 stop and count. Funny how often that throws me off my game though and it may be a while before I catch another fish. I certainly don't mind other folks who count them all just not my thing. I don't like a feeling of unease when an agent counts/measures them for me, I do like to know what is in my deathwell.

  32. Good thing I count in my head if I ever fish with Gavin. I only count bass, but count all bass I catch (when I'm counting...I don't count every trip like I used to because I don't keep records like I used to.) Went for a while this afternoon, taking a break from working on the cabin. Easy to count...5 largemouth and a bonus crappie, no smallmouth. I think a lot of guys would be surprised at how many fish you DO catch on a decent (not great) day of fishing an Ozark stream. I've fished with several guys and kept count of the fish we caught in my head, and when I asked them at the end of the day how many they thought we caught, they have always underestimated, often by close to half.

  36. The least accurate way to get information from any agency is to simply ask somebody who is wearing the uniform. Most of them simply don't wok with the enforcement side of the huse and will give your their opinion, not fact. Asking the right person or group is paramount to getting correct information. I cannot count the number of times I have seen bogus information given out.

    What's Cooking?

Turkey Smoking/Roasting Day! On Friday we are having a potluck for the teachers in the 7/8 end of the middle school. 8th grade will participate as well. Today I am smoking a turkey breast and roasting a 21 pound turkey as well. The first few photos show the start of the smoking process. I will keep the temp at 225 until the meat is done. I split the turkey in half to roast more efficiently and avoid drying out the breast. I needed tools for that process. Turkeys are not near as easy as chickens to spatchcock. The parts, except the liver, are in the oven roasting now so they can become the stock. The turkey goes in after that, although I will need to rotate the pans to the opposite shelf during the roasting. When everything is done, I will trim the meat from the bones. On Friday I can reheat in slow cookers. Of course, I will trim a bit off for our dinner tonight.

  38. Very nice Jim. What you guys have to realize is Jim is sooo far ahead of most anglers where he fishes with his jigs he ties to his tackle. It is EXTREMELY impressive to me to see the fish he catches because I know where he goes and nobody is doing what heโ€™s doing. We belong to a group of goofy anglers who fish UrbanWeirdWaters and the fishing is not easy.... not many catch or even think fish are where we fish. Jim excels in the UWW and itโ€™s nice to see the fruits of his labor.

    Jigfest 2018!

The houses we stay in are fully furnished so you don't need anything special there. This jigfest, so bring a couple of light or ultralight spinning rods with 2, 4 or 6 lb mono or whatever premium line you prefer tor throwing light weight baits. Your box of trout jigs. Jerkbaits are provisionally allowed. So bring that stuff too if you want. You'll have a great time, guaranteed.

    Detailing?

I have literally done 100's of boats and thousands of car interiors. If you have older carpet, do NOT use a power washer. Power washers can harm your carpet very quickly. Here are my steps: For the worst spots: Use undiluted simple green and carpet cleaner on the bad spots. Scrub these with a stiff tire brush and very little water. Wipe up the water or you can vaccume the water as you do it. Continue to add water and scrub these spots until the water is clear. Then apply a carpet cleaner (like resolve heavy traffic) and scrub in if you like with a brush over th entire boat. Then wash the cleaner out with a gentle stream of water until all the soap is gone. To finish ( and most importantly), vaccume the boat with wet dry vac. Do this until you remove all the water you can with the vaccume. On the last pass with the vaccume, hold it down firm and go against the grain of the carpet. This allows the carpet to fully dry. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Silhouette shooting, Well Wrench got a bunch of silhouette targets. I did not get any ordered but a package showed up in the mail from our fishinwrench here on OAF. Thanks @fishinwrench . I read the instructions and it said to tie some twine to the targets so you don't loose them after being hit. I am always thinking and came up with something, Some little chain, small clips and screw chain to 5/4 foot long sections of decking boards. I thought this is going to work and sent picture via text to wrench. Good idea he said and he had already lost a chicken where it had left the twine. Flying off into who knows where. So i set up my range from enclosed instructions, Put targets and yardage markers out. The closest 20 yard chicken with board I had to set on a bucket to clear the top of garden pond and a bench downrange. From a bench and lead sled I focused in on the chicken and pulled the trigger. Down it went. With a smile I went to target. The chain had wrapped around my stake marker and no chicken to be seen . Oh boy. I began to scratch around on the leaves and every few leaves was yellow just like the target. Nothing ! So i went to shop and got a magnet on a wand then began to sweep the leaves. Nothing . I could only imagine I had smashed it into the soft ground forever. Bingo another idea, Dumped old gas out of leaf blower and put fresh in. Fired it up and went to work. Just kept blowing and sweeping and looking, 16 yards down range as I was nearing a gooseberry bush it appeared! If it had made it into the bush I would of never found it, Somehow it had unclipped. I then shot the next one the pig at 30, The turkey at 36, Then the ram at 45. All 4 shots had hit and all a bit to the left. Had a pretty strong west wind blowing, The .25 pellet was hitting pretty hard and the boards shifted some as the little steel targets flying tightened the chain tight. i will on a calm day make sure my left right is on but I think it was the wind. i am also going to maybe go to split rings for attaching the chain to target. Thanks again Wrench, BilletHead

    Rebar

I ventured up to the dam this afternoon, not by boat but by truck. I put on my waders and fished below the dam for the first time in, I think, over 2 years. I don't like crowds, and it's too easy to hop in a boat and have tons of places to fish verses putting on waders and be limited to where I can walk and fish. So, I had not seen this area with no generation in a long time. It's changed. For those who fish up there, this comes as old news. But there's a new chute to the middle of the "lake" beside the flow at rebar. It's wide and shallow but deep enough to hold fish. The flow at rebar might be half, and according to some, doesn't hold the fish it used to. I fished the new chute. Have no idea what to call it. Does someone have a name? Rebar, Jr. Anyhow, I walked to the bottom and drifted several sizes and colors of scuds and caught 5 rainbows, nothing big at all. But did see some nicer rainbows and 2 big browns. The browns were moving all around and were hard to get a bug in front of. Outlet #2 is super shallow. I saw that when I was up there Monday night fly fishing. Seemed like the flow was less too but that might be because the water fans out so bad instead of being funneled down. Gordon Proctor must have gone down and moved some rocks around. Yes, there's a story there. Crowds weren't bad at all. And yes, I think I won't wait 2 years to go back.

  49. Oh she does Ronnie, Wednesdays and weekends we hobby together. Guess our incomes are not his and hers they go together in one fund. She has to work for insurance for one thing. Now for gearing up she has an equal autoloader shotgun just like mine that is hers, her layout blind and I guarantee she shoots her amount of shells. Then her three dedicated fly rods, waders just like mine too. Flys get tied in her preference of color combinations. As a matter of a fact the pink one from the fly swap you tied she got her mitts on pronto. She is half owner in our boats and has her own kayak. On and on I could go. On the plus side of this outdoor partnership. The Fringe Benefits are EXCELLENT ! Here is another example. Hunted Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Solo Tuesday and Thursday. Should not be out there myself but I did. So Tuesday morning 4AM get up. Pat was out there helping me load at 4:45. Wednesday it was 3AM with her along. Yesterday another 3AM wake up and she was helping load at 3:45. This morning she awakes me at 3AM. I told her no last night. She says are you sure you don't want to go? No, go back to sleep I can't do another day. This gal starts plucking goose and duck breasts and I singe the pinfeathers off then fillet off the breast halves. If I get behind she singes and fillets off too. I really don't know why I deserve her, BilletHead

And will continue to trudge the road to happy fishing. Keep on plugging buddy. Mike
