James 03-15-18
Royal Blue and 10 others reacted to Macsimus for a topic
Backing up just a bit, I fished the dam area Wed afternoon for 3 1/2 hours and it was a big, fat nogo. I don't have a secchi disk in the boat but I eyeballed the water clarity at 2-3'. Water temps were 47-49. I threw the Ned, mostly, a swim bait, and even chucked a rig for awhile until I hung it in the top of a cedar tree and broke it off rather than beach my boat on wind-blown shoreline rocks. Good riddance. So, Thursday I decided to just see and fish some new scenery so I headed to the James. I was quite surprised at the water color. I would guess visibility at a foot or less. Water temps were 50-52 for the day. I hit the water at the crack of 9:30 and fished until 5:30. Caught 24 total with a nice mix of Spots and LM with a few bonus keeper SM thrown in and one nice White Bass. 14 were keepers and most of those were just over 15" to 16" but late in the day, I did land two 17" and a skinny 18" LM. Fished a RkCrawler all day. I'm a DT-10 fan but I have to admit that the RkC digs much better and allows for a much slower retrieval which seems to be a good thing. Pictures are poor but I was concentrating on wind-blown banks and don't yet have the luxury of one of them fancy trollers that hold ya in place. I've suggested that I sell the wife's car to raise capital to invest in one but you can imagine how that went. My best day on the water since I got here Feb 27 and I know it was because I don't recall my back aching all day. The regular adrenaline rush of catching 'em does wonders for that. Threw in a sunset pic just because this lake has some of the best sunsets anywhere.11 points -

We got on the water around 8 fished most of the day, throwing jigs at the bank and working the brush nothing much. We found drifting a couple minnows worked alright but it was still just one here and one there but they were all keepers. The area is covered in spoonbill boats. Yes there is a k bass in the mix. One for Lefty
JestersHK and 4 others reacted to BilletHead for a topic
So most sites I read daily are now paying a tribute to Lefty Kreh. Like most of us fly fishers we have heard and read about him. I watched his fly casting videos to learn. I did not realize until the last couple of days how intertwined he, Flip Pallot and Jose Wejebe were. This morning I started looking at videos and step by steps for his Deceiver pattern. Many of these are based on his fly but I wanted to do "his fly" . I finally found the fly he came up with in the 60s and here is what I tied up, Did it while it was raining here in BilletHeadVille. My intentions were to fish it today. As the sky cleared the wind came up. Up enough I almost did not go.. Grabbed the 7wt. this fly and pulled on rubber boots and off I went to some ponds. The wind blew hard, did not know how hard until I got back to the house. First place has three different ponds. Hit the first one that is pretty small and narrow. Had one hit and that was it there. Looked at the second and it was murky and the largest of the three. Passed it and hit the kidney or L shaped pond. Wind gusting pretty well now whitecaps now lapping the downwind end. I knew with the wind blowing this would be the end to warm the quickest so this is where I went. At the bend it gets narrow and I could with the wind to my back I could get the fly out there "kind of". If I could get the back cast half way and get the line going forward with the wind it would sail out there. Today the graceful and pretty part of fly casting went out the door . A dozen or more of this mess and I finally missed two hits in one spot. Next cast and the first bass was landed. Not big but a fish on the new tied fly and the first Deceiver I have ever made, Then another bass from the same spot, More casts without a hit and then a move to another spot. This time I had to cross sideways to the wind direction. Oh my gosh I am a glutton for punishment. To get where I wanted the fly to land I had to quarter into the wind. By the time it hit the water I had a unbelievable bow in the line on the water, add the waves and you can only imagine. Missed three and finally hooked up with another, Had enough with this place and headed back to the truck. Took rod apart and headed back home BUT on the way I looked across the field towards the pond where on the last two trips back there had caught on the fly 42 bass and 10 bluegill. Turned into the field and parked. The farm field the pond is in the middle of had been disked yesterday. What rain we had was already dried on the field surface and I could see dust being kicked up. What the heck I thought as I rebuilt the rod and then trekked across the dusty field. Wind even worse I thought stupid is as stupid does as I got to the ponds edge. Wind to my back I stepped into the edge of the water in my knee boots until I felt the leak I have in them and took a step back.. Four more bass and some really bad casting I was done. A line of foam on the downward side of the pond bank where the waves hit the shore. I thought not too bad for the conditions and said a thank you to Lefty and his Deceiver. Then thanks for what he showed all of us in this sport. Todays mission accomplished Back to BilletHeadVille I went. Checked the weather page. Wind 26 mph with gusts reported 41 mph, BilletHead5 points -
Opening Day Snagging Report
grizwilson and 4 others reacted to Seth for a topic
We boated nine fish between 12am-5am and then two more later that afternoon. Two of them had tags. Our numbers should have been more, but we had a terrible time with rolling fish and not burying the hooks in to them. Everything we caught was up around the Walnut Springs area. The 72 pounder was caught while three of us were fishing a big tree for crappie. One of the guys decided to make a few cast with the snagging rod and ended up hitting it. I've got it all on GoPro, which I am working on editing right now. I'll try to remember to post the video on here as well once I have it done and uploaded to YouTube.nThe difference in the number of fish I graphed before daylight and after we got back out there that afternoon was staggering. Boat traffic and daylight really scatter those fish in a hurry. We also did some crappie fishing Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The only way we could get bit was fishing big wads of brush and trees in water 20-25' deep. The fish were about 10' down. Wednesday produced 8 keepers and Thursday produced 9 for us with plenty of shorts. This post has been promoted to an article5 points -
Made a trip to Ackerman access on the Norfork this morning since the White river is still too high for wade fishing (at least for us old guys). It was pretty slow early and then about mid morning things picked up. Caught 4 nice cutthroats, 1 brown and a handful of rainbows. Was fishing a Y2k with a ruby midge dropper and all the cutts took the Y2k and the rainbows the midge. Saw a good midge hatch and a few caddis coming off also. Can't wait for a good caddis hatch. Here's a pic of a couple of the better cuts.... This post has been promoted to an article5 points

Got out for a few hours for some spring break bass around Kimberling City. Was slower than I hoped. My last outing was 3/3 and I was surprised to see the temps down 2 degrees in the clean water. Saw from 44-48 in clear water, 48-50 with color. Color is on the dam side of the KC bridge though the creeks there were still clean. Mill was dirty front to back. Who knows with the forecasted rain. Caught a few, marked many more. Best below.3 points -

Didn't know they got this big. 11-year old angler catches state-record and possibly world-record river redhorse MDC congratulates Maverick Yoakum on breaking the state record by catching a 10-pound, 3-ounce river redhorse on Tavern Creek near St. Elizabeth. DIXON, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that 11-year old Maverick Yoakum of Dixon became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he hooked a river redhorse on Tavern Creek using a rod and reel. The new “pole and line” record river redhorse caught by Yoakum on March 4 weighed 10-pounds, 3-ounces. The new record breaks the previous state-record and world record pole-and-line river redhorse of 9-pound, 13-ounces caught at Tavern Creek in 2016. Yoakum was using worms when he caught the fish. MDC staff verified the record-weight fish using a certified scale in Brinktown. “I fought the fish for about two to three minutes before I got it to the bank,” said Yoakum. “I thought I caught a pretty big fish, but I didn’t know it was a state record until my dad told me to look it up online. I’m super excited to hold a state record!” River redhorse fish are part of the sucker family. They are a moderately chubby, coarse-scaled fish with a dorsal fin containing 12 or 13 rays. These fish can be found mostly throughout the Ozarks. Yoakum’s fish also beats the current world record, pending verification by the International Game Fish Association (IFGA). While the river redhorse does get much larger, IFGA only recognizes fish taken by pole and line. “Larger river redhorses are usually taken by gigging and do not qualify for the IGFA world record,” MDC Fisheries Programs Specialist Andrew Branson said. “Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish and this new unique record clearly shows why. This fish could possibly be the largest river redhorse ever taken with a pole and line.” Yoakum added it’s hard to believe he may be a world-record holder. “I just can’t believe it! I have never thought about holding a record, and now I may be a world-record holder. I can’t believe it!” he said. “I want to thank my dad for always taking me fishing, because if it wasn’t for him taking me fishing I wouldn’t have caught a fish like I did.” Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, trotlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl. For more information on state-record fish, visit the MDC website at http://bit.ly/2efq1vl.2 points

Being St. Patrick's Day you would think I could catch a green fish, not one green one did I catch, but I did catch 15 smallmouth. As usual, all on the PB&J Ned, 1/8 oz head. Even though water temps were about the same as when I was out Tuesday (48-49), the fish were closer to the bank, I don't know if I caught more than one or two deeper than 10 feet. Fish are still grouped up, caught just about all of them in 3 locations. Caught 3 keepers, one was a solid 18" fish, weighed almost 3.5 lbs. Dawn from the launch: First bass in the early AM: My best of the day: A nice looking keeper: This post has been promoted to an article2 points -

Spent a couple of days drifting the trophy area. It seemed a little busier than normal up there, I assume due to spring break in surrounding states. I caught a bunch of fish both days, including some pretty nice ones on the 15th. Caught an equal number on egg patterns, Y2Ks, size 14 and 12 gray, tan or sowbug scuds, and white jigs below a float. They really liked a white jig with just a little bit of chartreuse marabou in the tail. Of course I only had 2 of those, which I promptly lost. I'll be tying up some more of those before my next trip. Had a great stay at Lilley's Landing, albeit for way too short a time.2 points -

March 16 Quick Trip
grizwilson reacted to Seth for a topic
We hit Taneycomo for a few hours before heading back home from our annual snagging trip to the James River. I ran all the way up to Fall Creek and drifted down below Short Creek. Jigs produced the most action by far, but I also caught a few on the pink trout worm or trout magnet under a float. Most were 10-12", but we did catch a couple that were flirting with that 1# mark. The best are was from the mouth of Short Creek down to where it drops off on the creek side. They were piled in there pretty heavy. A couple of the docks up closer to Fall Creek had a lot of fish just below them in the current seams as well. Not sure if jig color mattered much. I threw black/yellow and white/grey and my buddy threw sculpin/peach and they all produced.1 point -

My equilibrium is not what it once was... I like it so far. Needs to be wider right off. Not very stable. You should see me in the wind trying to tie a knot in a jig. But been 30 years since I had a boat and it was just a jon. Heritage seems to handle OK. Better than I expected on rough water. 40 horse gets it down wind at 30 MPH or just over. Can cruise around 20 at 4500 RPM. I like the helm position and can stretch my legs out while driving. I've been in much fancier boats where I felt cramped behind the wheel. I think I like the natural aluminum better than paint. I slid it up on a rock bank without worry about scratches. Have new sonars coming next week so will see how many sheet metal screws are stripped! Rod holders are an after thought. Not secure and the tubes won't take spinning rods. I'm a spinning rod guy! Live well is about the right size for bait, but so far has not been a problem Bass Pro is a major disappointment, I must say. They are in the process of moving around to new buildings and that was part of it. I didn't even get a good idea of how to use the thing from them and don't feel I can go there for help. Have a local Mercury warranty shop and hopefully won't need even that.1 point -

I didn’t want to drive all the way to RB so I decided to fish the dirty water and launched out of PC. I fished steep banks with chunk rock. I used jigs and shaky head worms. The fish were surprisingly shallow. 10-15 feet. I caught over half a dozen, I don’t know may 8-9, But one was really good sized. It went 4.2 pounds. It definitely my biggest of the year. But then again, I’ve only been bass fishing 3 times this year so that might change. Water was dirty as heck and temp was right at 50. I’ll will say this, it was a grind, I really had to work for the fish I got. I hit it from 1pm till dark for those fish. A solid 6 1/2 hours fishing hard. Anyways, good luck out there and stay safe1 point -

One thing that really bugs me is the difference between Missouri and Montana when it comes to litter along the rivers. The Yellowstone along where our house is out there gets as much use as many Ozark streams, but the amount of litter along it is a tiny fraction of what it is on Missouri rivers. I love Missouri and the Ozarks, but sometimes I really don't like a very large portion of the people here who use the streams.1 point -

Read the fishing reports and some guides were saying the stripers and hybrids were in the Bennett's area. Went fishing on Tuesday the 13th and the guides were correct. They were in the Bennett's area. Wind gusts were up to 20 mph. Hard to keep the boat were I wanted it. Was able to catch 2 nice stripers and 1 hybrid. The fish were strong, so I released all of them. I was looking forward to fishing on Wednesday since the wind was going to be low. Went to the exact same places at the same time of day on Wednesday and did not get a bite. I did not see much on the fishfinder. Tried a few different places and could not find them. I guess they followed the shad schools to a different area. Still great to be able to fish on Norfork.1 point

We have learned to try to sway her to another subject and she begins to ask for a car. Then we work to another subject. She is still at home and will not budge to go anywhere. When I call if I get no answer or if the phone is busy I drive over. It is either she lost the phone and cannot find it or forgets to hang it up after talking. It is scary. She once raked leaves and burned them under the soffit on the back of the house (basement home). Melted the vinyl soffit. Fished two of our Blue Ribbon Creeks yesterday with a friend. We started with Mill Creek in Bohigan Wildlife area. I haven't fished Mill much. The other times I fished it was low, yesterday it was more of a torrent. We were able to wade and it was fishable but the water moving as fast and murky as it was made it hard work and fishing tough. We managed a few but all small. I think the recent rains changed the creek some but I am not as familiar with it as I am Blue Spring Creek. Blue Spring Creek was second, I think of this as my home creek as it was the first of the Blue Ribbon areas I fished after beginning to fly fish again. I think that's funny because parts of this creek are as far from fly fishing type water as I can think of. Anyway, My friend did well catching a half dozen fish with one nice kicker. I caught a few but I was struggling to hook up. The weather was great, so anytime outside today was a plus. It was nice to fish without a heavy coat. Bill1 point
